What is PNR Status:
PNR is abbreviation for Passenger Name Record. This unique ten digit number is associated with a ticket and is automatically generated by Computer Reservation System (CRS) which is like an indexing number in the database where the information of the passenger or group of passengers are stored. The details of the database also include important information about the passenger’s current reservation status which continuously get updated with every cancellation.
There are all the other journey details in the ticket like train number, journey date, travel class, origin, destination, ticket status, berth details for confirmed tickets, passenger details etc. Max six passengers can travel through one ticket. Your journey confirmation depends on the ticket status. These are explained below in detail:
Waiting List (WL):
If status is WL followed by a number then the passenger has a waitlisted status. This WL status can get confirm only if the passengers who have booked before you for the same journey cancel their ticket. SAY For example if the status is GNWL 4 / WL 3 , then this means that you have a waiting list of 3 (the latter number) and ticket will change to confirm only if 3 passengers who have booked before you for the same journey happen to cancel their journey.
GNWL/AVAILABLE
This means that current status of your ticket is CONFIRMED because some passengers who booked before you have cancelled their tickets. You will also gives some insight into the current ticket cancellation trends for this journey. For more on this, visit Trainman's trend analysis. If passenger status is waitlisted even after the chart preparation, then the passenger is not allotted any berth. In case all the passengers on an e-ticket have waitlisted status after final chart preparation, then the ticket gets automatically cancelled and the amount is refunded back to the user’s account. The passengers should NOT board the train in this case. Regarding, e-ticket passengers if one passenger has RAC or confirm status while other passengers on same ticket have waiting list status, then the e-ticket DOES NOT get cancelled automatically and all the passengers in the ticket are allowed to board the train.
Waiting list can be of various types:
General Waiting List (GNWL)
These tickets are issued when the passenger starts his/her journey at the originating station of a route or stations close to the originating station. This waiting list and has got the highest chances of confirmation.
Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL)
Tickets are issued for intermediate stations because usually these are the most important towns or cities on that particular route. These tickets are given separate priority and confirmations will depend on the cancellations of a destination confirmed ticket. The chart of the Remote location stations are prepared 2-3 hours before the actual train departure. There are less chances of confirmation for this ticket type.
PQWL: A Pooled Quota Waiting List
Ticket is shared by several small stations. The Pooled Quotas is working only from the originating station of a route, and there's just one Pooled Quota for the whole run. This is for the passengers travelling from the originating station to a station short of the terminating station, or from an intermediate station to the terminating station, or between two intermediate stations, this ticket is allotted.
RLGN: Remote Location General Waiting List
This ticket is issued when a user books a ticket where WL quota is RLWL. This indicates that after ticket booking RLWL gets named as RLGN.
RSWL: Roadside Station Waiting List
This ticket is issued when the seats are booked by the originating station for journeys up to the road-side station and distance restrictions may not apply. This has also very less chances of confirmation.
RQWL
If the booking is to be done for the ticket from an intermediate station to another intermediate station, and if it is not covered by the general quota or by either emote location quotas or the pooled quota, then request for the ticket may go into a Request Waiting List (RQWL).
TQWL(Previously CKWL)
If tatkal ticket starts going up, it directly gets confirmed and it will not go through RAC status unlike GNWL. During chart preparation, GNWL is preferred over tatkal waiting list (TQWL) therefore tatkal waitlisted tickets are less likely to get confirmed. To get a confirmed tatkal ticket, follow these tatkal booking tips.
Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC)
If the ticket status is RAC ticket, then very likely that the ticket will get confirmed by the time of chart preparation and berth will be given. If the ticket status remains RAC even after chart preparation, then user is allotted a half berth. TTE has to allocate berths which are cancelled after chart preparation to these RAC passengers.
Status-Confirmed (CNF)
Here, The passenger gets a full berth for the journey. The passenger may not get berth details for 1AC even if the ticket is confirmed when issued as the berth allotment for this class is done manually by the TTE on chart preparation.
